NEW Tonex/Quad Cortex Amp Profiles..!!

Post by Joe Rogers »

Most of you know I have been creating amp models for the Quad Cortex & Tonex platforms. Lately I have been getting some rare and vintage amps coming my way such as a '59 Gibson Les Paul GA-40, FYD Town & Country, multiple Standel models, Polytone (used by Johnny Gimble), Fox Custom, and others..... A few of these amps are profiled with settings for fiddle players. You can reach me through forum email or Facebook. Thanks!!!

Peddlers,
You won’t be disappointed in Joe. He does some hard-work to provide us with great preset models of loved amps.

He’s re-inspired my playing since I got into the ToneX pedal. I’ve been using the platform since Sept 24. Johnny Cox has helped too.

Hi everyone,

I use Joe's tones and I LOVE them. I specifically love the Peavey, Milkman, and Little Walter amps!

Just wanted to throw my two cents in, you should grab them for your rig!

Being relatively new to the pedal steel game, one of the most daunting (and interesting) things to me about the learning process has been figuring out the best tone for what
I'm wanting to do. I've looked at what the artists I'm drawn to use to create their sound but that's a pretty broad spectrum. I had bought a Tonex last year to use for my guitar but when I saw on this forum that someone was creating amp models for pedal steel I jumped at the opportunity to be able to access a lot of the gear that some of the great artists have used over the years. Since I have been using Joe's models, I have been able to get a good idea of what I like and it's made a huge difference in my playing. The Creamback, Little Walter, Standel, and Milkman models are some of my favorites and have helped me identify a tone that suits my playing. I really like the Peavey, Evans and Sarno models as well but the former group are the best for my style. Another huge advantage of using Joe's models has been being able to experience all of the sounds and tonal characteristics of the popular pedal steel options out there without having to buy or travel to try them out. I live in a market (Boone, NC) that doesn't have many options for a steel player to try gear and I've been guessing at what I might like. But after getting Joe's models, it's like I've been able to take home all of the amps that I'm interested in and play them as much, and for as long as I want before I make a decision. Furthermore, they sound so good that I'm not actively looking for an amp anymore. I've got the Tonex pedal and cab and they sound great. I also play the pedal through a Boss Katana (bypassing the preamp) and its just as good. When I do end up dropping a lot of cash for something, it will be because of the knowledge I've gained from these models. I'm really impressed with the work that Joe has put into his models and look forward to more.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments. I've been hard at work trying to put a period to the amp modeling, but it seems rare specimens keep coming out of the corners...

Ron & Andy, you guys have been wonderful ambassadors for my work.....thanks!!

Alex, I tell folks this tech is not amp replacement but rather amp preservation. The one thing I cannot duplicate 100% is the power amp sonics of each individual amp. The power amp that you use to drive your individual rig will put its own stamp on all of your amp models. But you will definitely get all of the warm & fuzzies from the original preamp characteristics. More than once I have profiled one of the amps in my library and said to myself, "If I had the money, I would buy this very amp right here and now." Some of them are really THAT GOOD...!!! This new technology is fantastic, but when you run across one of THOSE amps, you will know it when you play through it and realize the worth of owning the real thing.

Case in point, I had one amp left to complete the Boutique Collection. It was a preamp....the Realtube II 9002 with the steel mod. I have played BK Butler's products for years off and on. I recently purchased my unit off of this forum. When I got it, it didn't sound right to my ears, and there was one channel that wasn't working right. I sent it to BK, who responded that this particular preamp was built by Genz Benz...the company he sold to. He asked me what I wanted to do with the preamp. I told him to refurbish with the original RealTube II schematic, along with HIS steel mod. What I didn't know was that he put a new old stock Yugo tube in this thing. I really was not expecting to hear what came out of the unit, it is phenomenal. In fact, the profile I got out of it is now one of my mainstays. I originally intended to re-sell the preamp once I profiled it. I think I have changed my mind on that..LOL..!! You just never know until you run across the right one...!!!
